When Once Upon a Farm asked me to do a one week trial and review of their product, I was a little skeptical. I usually make all of Lucy’s food myself so I know exactly what’s in it. It’s surprising to see how much sodium, sugar and crazy additives are in baby food, even the trusted brands we all know and love.
After looking into their products a little bit more, I decided to give it a whirl. I must say I was NOT disappointed! Reading all about their mission and seeing all the partner farms, I was impressed and intrigued. Their products are fresh, organic and additive free, and the packaging is Eco-friendly too!
First of all, they shipped it fast and the packaging was great. Because it’s cold pressured food, it has to be refrigerated, so the packaging it comes in has to keep things cold enough to stay fresh and good. The ice packs were big and effective and the packing kept it all from leaking when it started to thaw. (There’s nothing worse than coming home to a soggy box filled with thawed ice and pools of water.)
The pouch packing was also really great. Made from BPA-free, Phtalate-free, and PVC-free plastic, they’re slim (so easy to transport) and durable, so you don’t have to worry about them breaking in your bag and creating a giant mess. The tops are easy to get off (but not for the little ones) and the design makes it virtually mess free. They have a clear description of each specific recipe, with cute little names for each of them. Then the nutritional information is clearly labeled on the back, so you never have to question what’s in it. And last but not least, the certified labels for organic, non-gmo and cold pressured protected products are stamped visibly right on the front. It’s also all recyclable, so you don’t have to worry about any more pointless waste.
Now to the good stuff: The food! Naturally I had to try each flavor myself first. I was genuinely impressed and excited for Lucy to try each one. They really did taste fresh and delicious, and the flavors were unexpected but truly enjoyable.
We had the opportunity of trying the following flavors in our trial:
- Green Kale & Apples (7+ months)
- Wild Rumpus Avocado (7+ months)
- OhMyMega Veggies (7+ months)
- Mama Bear Blueberry (7+ months)
- Gold-y Mango & the 3 coconuts (9+ months)
- Caroberry Mousse (9+ months)
- Just Right Oats (9+ months)
- Sun-Shiny Strawberry Patch (9+ months)
- Chocolate Ever After (18+ months) – now this one’s actually made for babies a bit older than Lucy (she’s still only 9 months) but she eats like an 18 month old (and has for months now), so I decided to let her try it. Needless to say, she loved it. But who doesn’t love chocolate. (Unless you’re crazy.)
Each and every flavor and recipe was new and exciting. And to think, that’s just the beginning. They have so many more amazing flavors that we can’t wait to try (yes, I said we because I will be trying each one too) and they’re always coming out with new and unique flavors. I really look forward to following them to see what new creations they come up with.
What makes them so different you ask? Well first and most important, you won’t ever find any preservatives, concentrates or processed purees in any of their products. Just fresh, whole and seasonal ingredients chosen from trusted partner farms. What you see is what you get. No surprises. I always like when I can read and understand everything in the ingredients list.
